Ivan Huergo’s vision was to create an organization that makes a difference while improving the lives of PSI clients and PSI employees. He has worked for some of the largest physical therapy providers including Concentra (the largest workers compensation company in the country) and Healthsouth (which was the largest provider of outpatient physical therapy services with clinics in all 50 states). He also worked for an orthopedic surgeon and registry at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) which has been ranked number one rehabilitation hospital in the country since 1991 by U.S.News & World Report. Throughout those experiences, Ivan observed some of the then-major players in the physical therapy industry conduct business, what worked well and what performed poorly. These observations became the genesis of PSI with one primary principle – treat the patient like a human being not like a number.

With just a folding massage table, a stool and a file box (because every new business needs a file box), Ivan started PSI. He began by making house calls to clients’ homes, driving anywhere in the Chicagoland area to help clients. When his schedule became too busy for house calls, he rented a 10’ by 10’ space in a private personal training facility so he could continue to work with his clients one-on-one, building a clientele through word of mouth referrals.

Ivan decided to open his first PSI Facility in Willowbrook and recruited Andrew Anderson to be part of his team. Andrew’s background included over 18 years of experience working in the restaurant industry as Director of Operations for KDK Restaurants which managed Marche, Red Light, Gioco, and Opera. Andrew was looking for a new direction to utilize his management skills and to learn something new. Initially, Andrew was the front office of the new Willowbrook facility when it opened on January 27, 2007. He would later attend night school to earn a billing and coding certification while simultaneously completing the MAT internship.

It became clear to both that it would take more than just opening the doors to build a practice. PSI has built a solid reputation in the community for delivery of quality physical therapy services coupled with education about your problem. Over 90% of the referrals are from word of mouth.

The vision of PSI is the marriage of clinical expertise with superior customer service. Since that day, with virtually no marketing strategy in place, PSI has continued to grow through word of mouth referrals. Blending clinical expertise, lifelong learning, and the total client experience has allowed PSI to focus on each client’s case individually which has provided better outcomes—the primary PSI marketing strategy.
